ZHANG Dongxiang, XUE Min, XU Hang, XU Wenguo, TARASOV V

Frontiers of Chemical Science and Engineering 2008, Volume 2, Issue 3,   Pages 319-324 doi: 10.1007/s11705-008-0051-y

Abstract: Ultra-fine zinc oxalate powders were prepared through a precipitation stripping method with bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (HDEHP) diluted by tetrachloride carbon as the extractant, and oxalic acid ethanol aqueous solution as the re-extractant and precipitator. Zinc oxide powders were obtained by decomposing zinc oxalate powders at 450°C. The prepared zinc oxide powders were characterized by transmission electron microscope (TEM), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Thermogravimetric analysis (TG), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transmission infrared (FT-IR) spectrum. The photocatalytic performance of methylene blue by zinc oxide was studied based on the Langmuir model and Photo-Layer model. The results show that some zinc oxide powders were micro-multipore materials with hexagonal crystal. The particle size was around 32 nm. The photocatalytic process was the control step in the chemical reaction. The photo catalytic process followed pseudo-first order kinetics and •OH concentration inside the photo-layer in different reaction condition were calculated according to the Photo-Layer model.

Application and mechanism of polysaccharide extracted from Enteromorpha to remove nano-ZnO and humic

Jianzhang Sun, Baoyu Gao, Yuanxia Luo, Moxi Xue, Xing Xu, Qinyan Yue, Yan Wang

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2018, Volume 12, Issue 3, doi: 10.1007/s11783-018-1029-8

Abstract: Enteromorpha polysaccharide (Ep) extracted from alga a novel green coagulant aid for nanoparticles (NPs) and heavy metal ions removal and the structure of EP was intensively studied in this study. The integration of Ep with polyaluminum chloride (PAC-Ep) coagulants exhibited higher coagulation performance than that of the polyaluminum chloride (PAC) because of the negatively charged NPs suspension and humic aid (HA) solution. Significant high removal efficiencies of dissolved organic matter (94.1%), turbidity (99.3%) and Zn ions (69.3%) were achieved by the PAC-Ep coagulants. The dual-coagulation properties of PAC-Ep for different pollutants was based on multiple mechanisms, including (i) Al charge neutralization; (ii) hydroxy aluminum hydroxyl bridging formed polynuclearhydroxy complexes bridge and sweep colloidal particles; (iii) adsorption and bridging of Ep chain for the NPs and heavy metal ions. Results indicated that the destabilization of colloid was induced by the coexisting HA and higher removal was achieved as ions adsorption was enhance in the presence of HA complexation. On the basis of that, the extraction of polysaccharide is a promising candidate for its high coagulation performance in water treatment.

MOF-5@Ni derived ZnO@Ni3ZnC0.7/PMS System for Organic Matter Removal: A Thorough Understanding of the Article

Youwen Shuai, Xue Huang, Benyin Zhang, Lu Xiang, Hao Xu, Qian Ye, Jinfeng Lu, Jing Zhang

Engineering 2023, Volume 24, Issue 5,   Pages 254-264 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2021.08.029

Abstract:

Highlights•[email protected]3ZnC0.7 was successfully synthesized as an effective adsorbent and oxidation catalyst.•Surface hydroxyl groups are the key active sites of both adsorption and degradation.•The degradation process regenerates the adsorption capacity of the catalyst.•Non-radical pathway is the main pathway of degradation in ZN-CS/PMS system.•The magnetic composite can be easily separated and the reusability was verified excellent. The heterogeneous catalytic activation of peroxymonosulfate for wastewater treatment is attracting increased research interest. Therefore, it is essential to find a sustainable, economical, and effective activated material for wastewater treatment. In this study, metal–organic frameworks (MOF)-5 was used as the precursor, and a stable and recyclable material [email protected]3ZnC0.7 that exhibited good adsorption and catalytic properties, was obtained by the addition of nickel and subsequent calcination. To investigate and optimize the practical application conditions, the elimination of rhodamine B (RhB) in water was selected as the model process. This study demonstrated that the degradation of organic matter in the system involved a coupling of the adsorption and degradation processes. Based on this, the mechanism of the entire process was proposed. The results of scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectrum analysis, and theoretical analysis confirmed that the van der Waals forces, electrostatic attraction, and hydrogen bonding influenced the adsorption process. Electron paramagnetic resonance analysis, masking experiments, and electrochemical tests conducted during the oxidative degradation process confirmed that the degradation mechanism of RhB included both radical and non-free radical pathways, and that the surface hydroxyl group was the key active site. The degradation of the adsorbed substrates enabled the regeneration of the active sites. The material regenerated using a simple method exhibited good efficiency for the removal of organic compounds in four-cycle tests. Moreover, this material can effectively remove a variety of organic pollutants, and can be easily recovered owing to its magnetic properties. The results demonstrated that the use of heterogeneous catalytic materials with good adsorption capacity could be an economical and beneficial strategy.
